![]() ![]() If the lighter is leaking butane or the ignition will not spark. Since I'm not a fan of cold showers, I wanted to just buy a new water heater since this is ten years old, but I figure, in the spirit of DIY home improvement, why not just replace the faulty component and have some spare change left over. If I use a butane torch to try to light it, I will get a flame as long as the butane. Coincidentally, when the plumber was here a few weeks earlier installing gas line, he too had a bit of difficulty getting the piezo to ignite the pilot. I then returned to redo the process, but then the piezo igniter was not producing a spark. Okay, first thing I would do is check to make sure there is no blockage between the igniter and the side of the lighter, if thee is something in there the piezo electric won't get a good path for spark, and won't spark, if there is nothing in there I would take a jewellers screwdriver or a ball point pen and push down on the part sticking out th. So, I turned off the gas and let it air out for 10 minutes. ![]() 1 I did get the pilot to re-light (saw the pilot light through the window), but I was not sure that I did it correctly (not sure why). I noticed that I couldn't see any spark when trying to light the pilot. One of our gas fireplaces was not working. After the work was complete, I turned on the gas at the main and initiated the process to re-light the gas water heater pilot. Jan 2019 Posts 1 Post Likes Ignitor not sparking, but button shocks me Hi, I'm a new homeowner, busy learning all this DIY home maintenance stuff. Replace the ignitor to correct the problem.I was doing some work on my residential gas lines which required turning off the gas at the main. So for a joke I wondered: How many clicks could be required to charge. When electronic ignitors with a good power supply and a clean spark gap still fail to spark, electronic components could be at fault. We all know piezo igniters, these small friends, like following one: All of them are probably quite similar: same spring, same piezo, same hit force, and so on. If a voltmeter shows power at the input to the ignitor module, the battery box and connections work properly. Gnawing rodents sometimes sever ignitor wires. Look for loose or corroded connections and for broken or chewed wires. If new batteries don't fix the problem, check the wiring that connects the battery box to the ignitor. If clean and correctly aligned electronic ignitors fail to produce sparks, check the batteries first. ![]() If a clean piezoelectric starter creates no spark, replace the ignitor module. If a spark appears, follow ordinary lighting procedures to start the grill. Pushing the ignitor button once should cause a spark. Clean the gap with a soft brush, and allow the ignitor to dry completely before testing again. Debris in the spark gap could short out the electrode. With the ignitor in proper position, pressing the button should create a visible spark. The sparking tip of the ignitor must align with the opening of the lighting tube or fuel may not reach the spark gap. Spiders, wasps or other insects sometimes build nests that block the tubes. Fuel could fail to reach the ignitor because of debris in the lighting tubes. This can also be used for Gas Grills that use the same Self igniter push button. The other 4 will also react mechanically, the piezo effect is reciprocal, which will consume the energy and reduce the voltage as well. If the grill lights with a match, the problem lies in the ignitor. My simple fix for my Weber Charcoal Grill not lighting. You have 5 of them in parallel in this circuit, assuming one is mechanically struck, the resulting voltage will be absorbed by the remaining 4 units, dramatically reducing the voltage. ![]() Most grills include a metal match holder and a lighting port. If the grill fails to light when operated properly, check the burners by lighting manually with a match. Make sure the tank has fuel and the main valve is open. The owner's manual gives procedures specific to the model of grill, but troubleshooting steps vary only slightly by model. Dead batteries or corroded contacts prevent normal operation. Electronic ignitors depend on batteries for power. Piezoelectric ignitors need no batteries, but the generating crystal could break. Electronic ignitors activate an oscillator circuit, charging a capacitor until voltage climbs high enough to jump across the spark gap. Piezoelectric ignitors mechanically compress a piezoelectric crystal that generates a voltage when under pressure. The spark sets the gas alight, and the flame travels back to the burner through the tube. On my Monogram 48 gas stove the piezo ingnighters keep clicking/poping even after the one is lit. When the grill operator opens the valve to a burner, gas enters a metal tube leading to the ignitor's spark gap. On my Monogram 48 gas stove the piezo ingnighters keep clicking/poping. ![]()
